Retail and Hospitality report steady Christmas Trade

In a sample survey of Ennis Chamber members conducted after the pre Christmas and post Christmas sales, business in the retail and hospitality sectors reported steady trade for the time of year.  Many indicated that overall business was up however there were no significant increases and the increases were marginal.  Those in retail reported that the Christmas rush came late with the last 2 days shopping the busiest. Businesses believe that the bad weather was a contributing factor to slower sales in early December as well as the fact that there was a long week leading up Christmas Day.  Retailers also indicated that the post Christmas sales period was quite successful and up on previous years.  Those is the hospitality trade reported more stagnant trade in the pre Christmas period with more of an emphasis on the effects of the adverse weather conditions as patrons were less likely to remain in town after shopping,  Nevertheless the hotel sector saw a boost in check-ins for the post Christmas and New Year period with last minute bookings by Irish people from around the country looking for a break away in Ennis.
