In welcoming the announcement by the Minister for Transport, Eamon Ryan TD, that Pádraig Ó Céidigh is the new Chairperson designate of the Board of Shannon Group Plc, the CEOs of Shannon and Ennis Chambers, Helen Downes and Margaret O’Brien, said that his appointment is welcome and that he brings the ideal credentials to this post at a critically important time for Shannon Airport.
“The competencies Mr Ó Céidigh brings to this role are wide and varied, not just in aviation but in all aspects of business. He understands how airlines work and their route decision processes. He understands how important connectivity is to the western seaboard and how essential such connectivity is for the business and tourism sectors alike, delivered with a schedule that suits the needs of both sectors, in terms of turnaround times.
“His skills and track record as an entrepreneur equip him with an in-depth understanding of a ‘burning platform’ and the type of decisions that need to be made to reignite a sector when it has been affected by an unforeseen obstacle, in aviation’s and in Shannon’s case, COVID-19.
“His leadership skills will enable him to steer the Shannon Group on a winning trajectory. He understands the need for balanced regional development and the potential that exists at a regional level.
“We look forward to working alongside Mr. Ó Céidigh as the aviation sector recovers from the worst-affected period in its history and to ensuring that air connectivity at Shannon Airport is restored to at least 2019 levels in as short a timeframe as possible, and with the Government supports it requires to do so.
“In recent months, Mr. Ó Céidigh took the time to engage with us on the Traffic Recovery Support Scheme (TRSS), which Shannon Chamber developed jointly with the IHF and with the support of Galway, Ennis and Limerick Chambers. His insights and advice were, as always, invaluable on how best to restore previously viable transatlantic, UK and European services to Shannon. He has a strong connection with and understanding of the West of Ireland and is perfectly positioned to work with all stakeholders to realise the potential of Shannon Airport, the Shannon Free Zone, Shannon Heritage and the wider Shannon region as key engines of growth across the Atlantic Economic Corridor.”
